The price of very fast normal primary lenses are getting more expensive
recentry. The composition of most these fast lenses is "modified double
gauss" type.
What is the origin of this modified Double Gauss type?
There are 3 mainstreams. The 1st is the real double Gauss type invented by
Alvan G Clark in 1889 arranged two Gauss telescope eyepiece compositions
symmetrically. The 2nd is this ”Planar" designed by Dr.Paul Rudolph
of Carl Zeiss positioned 4 groups 6 lenses in 1-2-2-1 complete symmetrical
composition. And the 3rd is "Opic" by H.W.Lee of TTH whose design
is un-symmetrical 1-2-2-1 to improve the performance of aberration.
The Lee's concept was taken over in many later normal lenses until now.
Later Xenon, Biotar, Speed Panchro were kinds of derivative design of Opic.
Lens Impression
The description of the Original Planar is very different from that of contemporary
Planar with sharpness from full aperture,. The characteristc of Original
Planar appears Softness with Halo in full aperture. Of course, it increses
the sharpness with closing diaphragm.
On the other hand, this perticular one shows very sharp expression from its full aperture.
The reason may be from the shape of internal lenses. The serial number of this lens is 27155 which means made in 1898 , a very first production of Planar. As the lens design of Planar was made in 1895, but the production started in 1897. And also, the number of production per year in that time is very limited, which means this one might be a very rare lens.
Although Dr.Rudolph's designed a Planar in a complete symmetrical composition, it is known that there are certain groups with asymmetrical design originally which I guess to apply for the purpose of the usage of Planar.
This one is the type of asymmetric which shows very sharp description maybe because of this asymmetrical composition. However when I exchange the front groutp and rear group, it shows a slight
soft expression as a typical original Planar lens.
